It’s no Dieselgate, but it’s still pretty embarrassing—BMW has filed a recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for just one BMW X3 for risk of fire in the electric power steering system, which “may not have been welded properly.”
The one specific car named in the recall is a 2017 BMW X3 xDrive 28i, so it’s only just seen the light of day. The recall reads:
SUMMARY:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling one model year 2017 BMW X3 xDrive 28i vehicle manufactured on June 7, 2016. This vehicle has electronic power steering (EPS), and the contact pins on the EPS control unit may not have been welded properly resulting in increased resistance.
CONSEQUENCE:
An increase in pin contact resistance can increase the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and ignition is off.
Yeahhhhh, sooooooo. BMW will contact the owner and have a dealer replace the possibly-faulty system free of charge. I wonder how they know it may not be welded properly?
Either way, if it’s you, sorry about the luck but you should definitely have it repaired. You should also let us know it was you. It’s like being struck by lighting, with just as much risk of fire.
