Volkswagen Reportedly Cooking Up A WRX-Killing AWD Polo R

I have long wondered why Volkswagen doesn't sell its tiny Polo in the U.S. With the Golf having grown up so much, I always figured the Polo would be a hit among people for looking for a good city-going microhatch. Now an all-wheel drive R version is in the works, and I want it more than ever.

With their confidence apparently bolstered by the Polo WRC's utter domination on the rally circuit, Volkswagen is apparently making a full-blown R version with a ton of power going to all four wheels.

That's the report coming from the UK's Autocar, which says the Polo R could have a 2.0-liter turbo four with 250 horsepower, the DSG transmission, and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Feeling burned that the new WRX doesn't come in hatch form anymore? Maybe Volkswagen has us covered with something even smaller.

Note that this car is different from last year's Polo R WRC, pictured up above, which had 217 horsepower and front-wheel drive. It certainly sounds much meaner.

Why now, you ask? According to Autocar, it's because it's got the same guts as the Audi S1 that's coming later this year. Sounds like a good time.

Now we just need them in America. Rally up all the small cars!
